Matt Schilit on the High School Assessment Program (HSAP)

Matt Schilit

Matt Schilit

Matt Schilit is a longtime school administrator, having served as a teacher, assistant principal and principal.  In his current position with the Allendale County School District in South Carolina, Matt Schilit supervises all data, evaluation and testing. Since testing is an integral part of a school’s funding, it is important for school systems to find leaders such at Matt Schilit with extensive experience in the classroom environment.

In this brief interview with the staff of A Gathering of Experts, Matt Schilit discusses the High School Assessment Program known as HSAP.

A Gathering of Experts: Matt Schilit, what is the HSAP and what is it designed to assess?

Matt Schilit:  It is South Carolina’s standardized testing tool designed to assess the academic progress of our high school students in the spring of their sophomore year, or the second year after their initial enrollment in the ninth grade.  It consists of an English language arts test and one in mathematics.

A Gathering of Experts: Matt Schilit, is it required of all students?

Matt Schilit:  Yes. A passing grade is actually now a requirement to receive a high school diploma in South Carolina.

A Gathering of Experts: Matt Schilit, what happens if a student fails to pass?   Can a student take it more than once?

Matt Schilit:  Yes. Students who are unsuccessful in one or both parts of HSAP on their first attempt are given the opportunity to take the test again during the set testing dates.   In addition, a summer remediation program may be available and a summer administration of the HSAP may be offered to students who have not passed the exit examination and who are planning to graduate before the beginning of the next school year.  State guidelines require that an opportunity to receive assistance be offered to all students who fail to pass all or part of the HSAP.

A Gathering of Experts: Matt Schilit, what types of items are on the test?

Matt Schilit:  The English language arts examination consists of multiple choice and constructed response items as well as an essay-type portion, during which portion students may use dictionaries. The mathematics test contains multiple-choice items and three constructed-response items that require students to show their work to support their answers. Students may use calculators while taking any part of the mathematics examination.

A Gathering of Experts: Matt Schilit, are there any exceptions to who must take the HSAP?

Matt Schilit:  Yes, there are. For students with disabilities who have an IEP (Individualized Education Plan) and have taken the test at least once, the IEP team will determine on an annual basis whether or not they will be required to pass it.  They may be offered an alternate test known as the SC-Alt upon the recommendation of the IEP team.  There are participation guidelines in place.  Also, certain accommodations may be made for students with limited English proficiency (LEP) plans in place.

Matt Schilit has a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and a master’s degree in Educational Administration from the University of South Carolina.

Pam Gray Bonaventure

Pam Gray Bonaventure

Pam Gray joined Bonaventure in 2004 and quickly rose to become its chief operating officer. Building on a successful career in senior living and care, Pam Gray coordinates Bonaventure programs that allow seniors to age with vitality. In the following interview, Pam Gray, Bonaventure COO, offers tips for aging with wellness in mind.

Gathering of Experts: Thanks for sharing your expertise! First, tell readers about Bonaventure.

Pam Gray, Bonaventure COO: Bonaventure is a senior living and care company, focused on providing services that help seniors live life on their terms.

Gathering of Experts: Where are your communities located?

Pam Gray, Bonaventure COO: Bonaventure operates 37 communities in six states in the Western U.S.

Gathering of Experts: Tell readers more about helping seniors live how they want to.

Pam Gray, Bonaventure COO: This philosophy is what drives our business throughout the communities.  It’s all about listening to what the residents want, and ensuring we’re providing the services and care they deserve and expect.

Gathering of Experts: How is wellness incorporated?

Pam Gray, Bonaventure COO: Getting older doesn’t automatically mean immobility and frailty. Residents have daily opportunities to be active and improve their wellness through a variety of scheduled activities designed with their needs in mind.

Gathering of Experts: What options are offered onsite?

Pam Gray, Bonaventure COO: Most communities offer exercise facilities and all offer healthy food choices. A number of recreational programs are also offered throughout the week, such as yoga classes and dance night.

Gathering of Experts: What wellness considerations should seniors focus on?

Pam Gray, Bonaventure COO: First, it’s important for seniors to understand that educating oneself about the physical changes that come with aging can go a long way.

Gathering of Experts: What are some of these changes?

Pam Gray, Bonaventure COO: It is a fact that muscles lose mass and bones lose density with age. It’s something we just can’t avoid.

Gathering of Experts: Why is this problematic?

Pam Gray, Bonaventure COO: Loss of strength in the bones and muscles can lead to mobility issues and increased risk of injuries from falls.

Gathering of Experts: What can seniors do to address these changes?

Pam Gray, Bonaventure COO: The good news is that regular exercise can help slow the process and help keep the body strong.  Many seniors who actively participate in daily physical activities say they feel better now that when they were younger!

Gathering of Experts: What types of exercise do you recommend?

Pam Gray, Bonaventure COO: Seniors should do aerobic, strength and flexibility exercises weekly.

Gathering of Experts: How can seniors fit it all in?

Pam Gray, Bonaventure COO: There should be daily exercise, but not all types of exercise need to be done each day.

Gathering of Experts: What would a week of exercise look like for a healthy senior?

Pam Gray, Bonaventure COO: Walking a few times a week, daily stretching, and lifting light weights a couple of times would be a great goal to start with.  It’s important not to over-do it, so stay within your comfort zone.  And always check with a doctor before changing up your regular routines.

Gathering of Experts: Where can readers learn more?

Pam Gray, Bonaventure COO: The AARP and Mayo Clinic are great resources.

Gathering of Experts: Thanks for your insight!

Pam Gray, Bonaventure COO: Always happy to help any senior continue to do the things they love whenever I can!

Does the President Actually Tweet?

Twitter has exploded in popularity in recent years, rivaling more established social networks like Facebook. From the very beginning, Twitter has been championed by celebrities like Ashton Kutcher and Taylor Swift as a perfect way to reach out to fans and share their thoughts. It didn’t take long for politicians to take notice either. Barack Obama’s campaign embraced the Internet and social media during his 2008 candidacy, and ever since he was elected, he has maintained an active Twitter account that currently has 30.1 million followers.

However, a vast majority of the tweets that come from this account aren’t written by the president. On the rare occasion that President Obama personally tweets, he signs it with a distinct “-bo”. While most people understand that the tweets coming from this account may no longer be tied to Barack Obama or even his staff, many still believe that each and every tweet from “@BarackObama” is tweeted by the president, or at the very least a White House intern who painstakingly writes each message to avoid typos, spelling errors, and other embarrassing gaffes. But in reality, the President’s social media accounts, while previously maintained by staff, are now maintained by a 501(c)4 called Organizing for Action.

The problem with this is that Barack Obama’s Twitter account is considered “verified,” which means it has been researched and deemed credible and trustworthy. Twitter verifies accounts belonging to celebrities and other noteworthy people to ensure they are the authentic sources of their tweets, as compared to people who create fake accounts and pose as others on Twitter. Is it possible accounts that may change hands over time no longer receive any scrutiny?

Whatever the answer to this question, it’s generally agreed that Barack Obama’s name and picture appearing on Twitter have done wonders for his career and campaigns, and other presidential hopefuls have taken notice and will certainly take advantage of the service in 2016 and beyond.

Bonaventure CEO Kelley D. Hamilton Talks about Hobbies for Senior Adults

Kelley D. Hamilton

Kelley D. Hamilton

Kelley D. Hamilton serves as CEO of Bonaventure Senior Living. As CEO, Kelley D. Hamilton manages a company with 37 senior living communities across the western half of the United States. Kelley D. Hamilton is rightly proud of Bonaventure’s track record when it comes to meeting the needs of their older-adult residents. Kelley D. Hamilton leads a great management team at Bonaventure, promoting exceptional senior lifestyles throughout the northwest. Today, we talk to Kelley D. Hamilton about hobbies for those who are of retirement age.

Q: Kelley D. Hamilton, with Baby Boomers hitting retirement age, we’re seeing a retiree population that’s more active and engaged. What are some popular hobbies for seniors?

Kelley D. Hamilton: We see a big boom in ancestry and genealogy work. It opens people up to things they didn’t know about their ancestors, and the Internet has made it much easier to access that information.

Q: Things like Ancestry.com?

Kelley D. Hamilton: Yes, that is a perfect example. That’s all work that used to take hours of sorting through paper records.

Q: Yes, isn’t there a big boom in Internet use by seniors?

Kelley D. Hamilton: There sure is. Every generation of internet browsers and operating systems is becoming a little easier to use. Seniors find that a whole new world opens up for them with the internet.

Q: Aren’t seniors on social media a lot, too?

Kelley D. Hamilton: Yes, now more than ever. Facebook, Pinterest and Twitter have plenty of seniors on board, and it gives them a whole new way to keep up with family, friends and interest groups.

Q: Do seniors tend toward music?

Kelley D. Hamilton: Absolutely! Part of the beauty of retirement is being able to pursue things you didn’t have time for during your career. Learning an instrument is a perfect example.

Q: Along the same lines, what about painting?

Kelley D. Hamilton: Yes, another great example. A lot of people find they have a hidden muse, and a creative message that’s waiting to get out. Canvas, paint and brushes are a great way to unlock that.

Q: They’re cheap, too.

Kelley D. Hamilton: Yes, if you do five paintings and decide you don’t like them, it’s easy enough to just throw them away and start over with five more.

Q: Tell me about faux stained glass, I’ve heard a little about it.

Kelley D. Hamilton: Well, you can get patterns online or just make your own, and then have your local hardware store cut glass to fit. The rest of the kit is available at supply shops. It’s painstaking work, but the results can be spectacular.

Q: Really, about anything that keeps people engaged is good, isn’t it?

Kelley D. Hamilton: Yes, even for seniors who are really compromised physically, things like crosswords, Sudoku puzzles, card games and reading are great for keeping the brain active and engaged. Some seniors have even found their hobbies to be profitable by selling their creations and artwork at craft shows or even through online auction sites.

During his time at Bonaventure, Kelley D. Hamilton has instituted town hall meetings and appraisal forms to give residents a voice in the management of the company. Kelley D. Hamilton is a graduate of Portland State University. After graduation Kelley D. Hamilton co-founded Kline Hamilton Realty Advisors. Kelley D. Hamilton came on board with Bonaventure in 2000, when the company was known as Mountain West Retirement and was comprised of only two communities. Kelley D. Hamilton is a firm believer in Bonaventure’s motto, “Live Life on Your Terms” which directly supports the “Retirement Perfected” philosophy.

Types of Living Facilities for Seniors

Many retired and elderly people prefer to spend their final years in some type of a retirement home that allows them to live comfortably and with little trouble. Below are various types of facilities that cater to different needs and desires to enjoy a well-deserved retirement.

1. Independent living facilities are recommended for people who need little to no help. The facility may offer meals, activities, transportation and recreation for seniors. Independent living facilities are also known as senior housing, retirement communities, or congregate living facilities.

2. Active-adult communities are housing developments that offer independent, fairly maintenance-free living to senior adults age 55 and older. Some communities are “age restricted,” which means 80 percent of homeowners must be 55 and over. Communities that are “age targeted” simply market to the 55+ seniors. Many residents in these types of communities continue to work part or full time. Active adult communities may offer golf, dance, yoga, crafts, cookouts and even academic classes.

3. Green and eco-friendly communities. Many elderly people prefer to live in communities that are environmentally friendly. Such communities use recycled building materials and therefore achieve a high standard of indoor air quality, while leaving a minimal footprint on the environment.

4. Advanced care facilities provide daily support and care. Advance care facilities usually provide meals, medication management, housekeeping and other services. These facilities are also known as assisted living facilities. Communities below fall in the advanced care facilities category:

  • Continuing care retirement communities provide independent living, assisted living, and nursing care. These communities cater to their residents’ particular needs; for example, if one spouse needs high-skilled nursing care, the other can keep on living in his or her own apartment. When the other spouse gets better, they are able to move back to the apartment.
  • Assisted living communities provide buildings with meals, medical services, housekeeping and transportation.
  • Retirement homes are increasingly for the very old. It is comparable to assisted living in several ways, but not as high skilled of care as a nursing home.
  • Nursing homes are usually the last stay for the elderly. These homes provide a high level of skilled care.

Report: Professor King Predicts YOR Health Future

YOR Health

YOR Health

YOR Health, a revolutionary relationship marketing company that specializes in premium quality dietary supplements, explains why their opportunity is the best for those seeking stability and momentum.

Independent Analysis

With a doctorate earned at Harvard University’s prestigious Business School and a current post as Professor of Marketing at the University of Illinois in Chicago, Dr. Charles King is indisputably network marketing’s leading educator. Dr. King is also an enthusiastic teacher of the history of the network marketing business model and direct sellers.

Dr. King’s historical research has helped establish the stability and credibility of the network marketing industry. Acting as an evangelist for the industry, he is also one of the most sought after network marketing and direct sales analysts.

Impressed by his outstanding resume and dedication to honest evaluations, YOR Health asked Dr. King to provide an analysis of the company’s market position in 2010. YOR Health has always sought to understand the market objectively in order to provide our Independent Representatives (IRs) with the most accurate and up-to-date information they need to succeed. When YOR Health received Dr. King’s report, they were astounded by the results. Here’s Dr. King’s projection of YOR Health’s future growth:

YOR HEALTH SALES GROWTH

2008-2009 Growth      49%

2009-2010 Growth      77%

2010-2011 Projected Growth 100%

2011-2015 Projected Growth 500%

How do these figures translate into dollars? Dr. King predicts that by 2015, YOR Health will reach a Targeted Sales volume of $500 million.

This astounding prediction is based on Dr. King’s analysis of key aspects of the company. According to Dr. King, YOR Health has the right elements to succeed, including a focus on the growing digestive health market and the capability to dominate it with superior technology and products.

In addition, the YOR Health corporate team scored big points, as did the close-knit corporate culture. The YOR Health dedication to a holistic approach to business and the belief that YOR Health is “Your Company” have fostered organic growth and allowed YOR Health to thrive.

The Right Targets

Although having the right elements in place is important, that is not enough to achieve the phenomenal growth Dr. King projected, points out the team at YOR Health. Action is necessary to get results from these elements. Fortunately, Dr. King’s assessment finds YOR Health has the right strategy by choosing to move into key international markets, especially in Asia and Latin America. This international push allows IRs to be in the right place at the right time to build these new markets. Dr. King believes the growing middle class market in Latin American and Asian countries has the potential to bring explosive growth to YOR Health.

The Big 4

In the early 80s, Dr. King pioneered a model called the 4 Phases of Growth, which can be used to benchmark the growth of successful network marketing companies. The key phase of growth is called “Momentum,” and it is where the network effect of the multi-level marketing business model comes into play. In his analysis, Dr. King placed YOR Health at a point just before the momentum phase, a place that many companies strive to reach. Based on the increase in monthly sales in 2012, with each month surpassing the last, YOR Health is building the acceleration now that will help the company breakthrough to the momentum phase.

Validation

Since its inception, YOR Health has striven to be transparent about the way it conducts business. Part of that effort is being absolutely truthful about who the company is, what YOR Health says the products can do, and what is claimed about the opportunity. YOR Health is thrilled to receive validation from an independent and credible source like Dr. Charles King about the YOR Health business model, growth prospects, culture, and the benefits of this opportunity. YOR Health is determined to be a company that can stand by what it says and can prove its worth. While other companies may be content to make grand claims without back-up substantiation, YOR Health goes the extra step of proving what it says, whether with clinical studies, third-party validation or other expert analysis.

This is why YOR Health can say the company offers the best opportunity of any network marketing company in the world.

Why Wait?

Now is the best time to become a YOR Health IR, as the company begins to enter the momentum phase. There is no doubt that fortunes will be made during this exciting time in the business. YOR Health encourages prospective IRs to start today, and take advantage of the multiplier effect that is intrinsic to network marketing. If you’re already an IR, now is the time to go all out. If you do not have a presence in the YOR Health international markets, consider doing whatever it takes to expand your team in the Asian and Latin American markets. The YOR Health business model is poised to skyrocket, and they want you to blast off with them!

YOR Health is a leader in the direct-sales nutrition market and offers its vast network of Independent Representatives the right tools to help their customers make positive decisions in regards to health and well-being. Through the company’s widely distributed magazine, YOR SUCCESS, the YOR Best Body 8-Week Challenge, and many other opportunities to engage IRs and customers alike, YOR Health has grown to a multi-million dollar company since its humble beginnings in 2008.

Dr. Cruz Discusses Natural Relief for Dog Skin Care with Incredible Discoveries

If you’re a dog lover like me, you’re no stranger to their constant scratching and biting at their dry, itchy skin. Sure it’s common canine behavior. But, when is an itch more than just an itch?  Get ready to meet Dr. Bernadine Cruz, renowned veterinarian for over 20 years.  You may recognize her from her numerous TV appearances or from her pet radio show in Los Angeles.  Dr. Cruz is an author and nationally recognized speaker on pet care.  You’ll also hear from renowned chemist David Fielder who will talk about the scientific breakthrough in pet care.

Incredible Discoveries: Dr. Cruz, welcome.

Dr. Cruz: Thank you, for having me.

Incredible Discoveries: I’m a die-hard dog lover.  It seems that whether it’s a pedigree or mutt, dogs still share one thing in common; they scratch like crazy.  What causes this?

Dr. Cruz: Well, dogs can be itchy for every reason that you and I are; and then some, depending on where they itch, bite, scratch, chew will often times give us reasons why.  Their skin is the largest organ on their body; but it has very limited number of ways it can react:  dryness, redness, itchiness.  And did you know that a dog’s skin is actually thinner and more fragile than ours?  So, we really need to take very good care of that skin.

Incredible Discoveries: There are lots of products out there that you can buy at convenience stores, pet stores, doggy spas. Yet our dogs are still scratching uncontrollably. Why do these products fail us?

Dr. Cruz: The problem is many of them address the itch in only one way – they only clean, only moisturize, or only medicate.  You need to do all three to get to the root of the cause.

Incredible Discoveries: That’s why you wind up with a cabinet full of bottles.

Dr. Cruz: Many of them provide temporary relief by washing away the allergens and irritants; but they do not provide sustained skin relief by addressing the skin irritation and potential inflammation.  Some contain harsh chemicals that aggravate skin conditions – and even steroids.

Incredible Discoveries: Steroids?

Dr. Cruz: Steroids are often used to minimize allergic reactions and reduce skin inflammation; but can have side effects such as increased appetite, change in mood and they can even depress the immune system.

Incredible Discoveries: To think that some of the soaps that itch treatments we trust may actually expose our pets to these potential dangers is very frightening.

Dr. Cruz: And they don’t always work.

Incredible Discoveries: How does AvenaPro 6 work?

Dr. Cruz: AvenaPro 6 unleashes 3 different oat active emollients, to address the underlying causes of itching, called triple oat complex:  one to calm the itch, another to protect and moisturize the skin and follicles, and another to clean the hair coat.

Incredible Discoveries: “Active oats” – what does that mean?

Dr. Cruz: It means they have powerful therapeutic properties.  It’s very unique.  They have the ability to actually get into the skin and restore health.  AvenaPro 6 features Avenanthramides, a remarkable all natural oat compound that’s clinically proven to reduce itching and shedding better than the leading veterinary therapy.  AvenaPro 6 starts working immediately on contact as the triple oat complex goes deep to quench skin.  You may even see results after the first bath.  You’ll definitely feel it – smoother skin, fewer flakes, less itching and biting.  Most anti-itch formulas take at least 5 minutes to soak in.  I don’t know about you but I’ve never met a wet dog that can sit still for that long.  But AvenaPro 6 works in only 2 minutes.  You’ll never have to chase after your sopping wet dog again.

Incredible Discoveries: I have to ask – what is so magical about this revolutionary formula?

Dr. Cruz: It’s the triple oat complex, a powerful blend of 3 oat extracts: avenanthramides, oat beta glucan and oat peptides.  In human medicine the FDA considers these oat extracts a type 2 skin protectant for their therapeutic properties that diminish redness and irritation, and their antioxidant activity which helps repair the skin.

Incredible Discoveries: Oatmeal is something I’ve seen in skin care products that I actually use on my own skin.

Dr. Cruz: Believe it or not, AvenaPro 6 is better than our oatmeal products in a lot of ways.  AvenaPro 6 scientists discovered that the avenanthramides found in the hulls of oats are powerful antihistamine compounds.  They created a patented extraction process for carefully removing the oat extracts to preserve purity and potency.  This purity helps them get absorbed.

Incredible Discoveries: Dr. Cruz, it sounds to me that the key to absorption is solubility.

Dr. Cruz: That’s right.  Without solubility there are no benefits.  You see, other oatmeal formulas contain a starchy matrix of colloidal molecules that keep the avenanthramides trapped inside.  That crude form is over 10,000 times larger than pure avenanthramide molecules.  So, there’s little chance of them getting absorbed into the skin.  They’re not even water soluble.  They harden on the skin without delivering any benefits.

Incredible Discoveries: So, what happens?  They cake up on the skin and get washed away?

Dr. Cruz: Yes, they’ll feel good on the skin for a little while; but there’s no lasting benefit beyond that.  But AvenaPro 6 avenanthramides are not only smaller because of the way they’re extracted; they’re water soluble, which helps them get carried through the skin’s surface.

Incredible Discoveries: What about shedding and pet dander?  If you have kids, you don’t want them breathing in this dead skin.

Dr. Cruz: Dander makes up a huge percentage of the junk floating in the air of our homes.  Clinically studies have shown that the AvenaPro 6 system decreases scaling and dander by more than 90%.

Incredible Discoveries: Incredible!  AvenaPro 6 does all of this and then some.  You know, we pin our hopes on pet store products because the alternative can be a costly visit to the veterinarian, not to mention the costs of prescriptions.

Dr. Cruz: Some severe skin conditions do require a visit to the veterinarian.  However, AvenaPro 6 is quite simply the most remarkable over-the-counter skin soothing system for pets that I’ve ever come across.  And it’s clinically proven.

Incredible Discoveries: Tell me about the clinical study where AvenaPro 6 was tested against the most popular pet shampoo.

Dr. Cruz: A double blind clinical trial conducted by veterinarians revealed that AvenaPro 6 out-performed the top selling prescription shampoo.  They saw a 94% reduction in scaling and dander.  They also saw reduced shedding and improved skin and hair coat condition.  And this was after only 3 baths.

Incredible Discoveries: In only 3 baths?  Well, it was vets and professional groomers who were handling the dogs, right?

Dr. Cruz: No, actual dog owners washed their own pets.  They used as much or as little product as they needed to work up a good lather.  That’s how easy this product is to use.  Use it like any shampoo.  Leave it on for 2 minutes to gives the avenanthramides and oat emollients time to penetrate the skin.

Incredible Discoveries: Dr. Cruz, I want to thank you so much for joining us.

Dr. Cruz: Thank you, for having me.

Treating Your Skin the Right Way

When you’re ready to whip up a healthy meal, you’ve got to have the right ingredients.  Well, the same thing can be said for skin care.  If you’re going to have great and healthy skin, you’ve got to know the ingredients.  At the very least, it’s important to know what to look for, when deciding what the best ingredients are.  And so, The Balancing Act ® is happy to be joined by skin care experts Jason Toms and Lisa Savage – both of Hollywood-based InfiniteAloe® skin care.

The Balancing Act: Hello. It’s great to see you.

Jason Toms: Thank you so much, for having us.

The Balancing Act: Thank you, for being here.  So, let’s talk about Hollywood and about healthy, vibrant, skin.  In Hollywood, beauty is front and center.  When it comes to skin care in Hollywood, what are the beautiful people in Tinseltown looking for?  What are they doing?

Jason Toms: The people in Tinseltown are looking for what you’re looking for; and that is a formulation for skin care that works.  They are looking for formulations that are, basically, heavy and made from natural ingredients.  With no added toxic chemicals and things that are formulated with a really comprehensive delivery system.

The Balancing Act: You know?  Here’s the thing.  When I’m reading ingredient labels, if I can’t pronounce it, I’m wondering if it’s something that I should be putting on my skin.  How do we know what’s good and what’s not so good, guys?

Lisa Savage: That’s definitely where we need to educate ourselves, because it is.  It’s very confusing, especially with so many new products coming on the market every single day.  You definitely want to be careful of products that have heavy chemicals as the first ingredients.  You want to be careful of too much fragrance, because those are irritants for the skin.  And, you definitely want to stay away from anything that clogs your pores, because that’s shown to advance aging.  And, we don’t need any help with that, do we?

The Balancing Act: Girl, please.  That’s already happening at home; so we don’t need any more help with that one.

Lisa Savage: (Laugh) No, we don’t!

The Balancing Act: So, I want to talk a little bit about what I know is a really important ingredient to both of you; and that’s aloe vera.  I notice aloe vera in a lot of skin care products.  What I didn’t know (and, you educated me on this, Jason) there are over 300 different varieties of aloe vera.

Jason Toms: Absolutely.

The Balancing Act: How do I know which one is best for me?

Jason Toms: Luckily, scientists have figured it out.  The number one aloe vera, out of over 300 varieties, is Aloe Vera Barbadensis Miller.

The Balancing Act: What’s so great about this?

Jason Toms: Well, it’s been scientifically proven to heal the skin up to 10 times faster than normal.

The Balancing Act: Wow!

Jason Toms: Yeah.  So, if you get a cut, bruise, burn, or abrasion – that can actually help with the healing process.  Obviously, your body heals itself.  And there are different beneficial qualities to aloe vera such as it is anti-fungal, antiviral, it’s antibacterial, and it’s an analgesic – which relieves pain.  Also, it’s really good for arthritis.

The Balancing Act: So, in general, what should we be looking for in terms of ingredients; and I guess more specifically, is there anything that we should avoid?

Lisa Savage: Well, yes.  From my research that I’ve done, there are certain chemicals you want to avoid that are, actually, harmful to the body.  Such as parabens, propylene glycol, petroleum, mineral oil.  Those are going to irritate your skin.  Plus, not to mention, it’s found that whatever we put on our skin can be found in almost every organ in our body.

The Balancing Act: EEEEEK!

Lisa Savage: So, it’s imperative that we put healthy, natural ingredients on our body.

The Balancing Act: I think you’re right.  Jason, I want to ask you this question: As women age, do you think they need to be paying more or less attention to the kinds of skin care products they use?

Jason Toms: Well, absolutely.  You do need to pay attention; and to be honest, the earlier, the better.  You don’t want to use things when you’re young that you’re going to regret later; but with the right ingredients, you know, it’s never too late.  Your skin changes as you age, too.  So, you kind of want to switch your skin care regimen to suit where you are in, in life.

The Balancing Act: That’s great insight.

Jason Toms: With the strongest aloe vera out there, the Barbadensis Miller, you can care for your skin today in preparation for your skin care tomorrow.  Take our InfiniteAloe products, for example.  They contain tons of oils, vitamins, and antioxidants.  We created a light and non-greasy formula that just soaks into your skin.  Men love the product, children love the product, and you can use it to shave with.

The Balancing Act: So, it’s a multi-use product.  I think is great for our audience, because we’re trying to balance it all.

Jason Toms: We’re all about convenience!

The Balancing Act: Thank you again for being here and for this great information.

Jason Toms: We were happy to be here.

David Slone Talks about His Fascination with Root Beer

David Slone

David Slone

Today we talk with David Slone, Sales Manager and Used Car Manager of Weld County Garage. David Slone has a rather interesting hobby: collecting root beer.

Q: David, when did your fascination with root beer begin?

David Slone: Well, I guess it was about twelve years back when I got a package from one of my vendors. Inside were samples of Henry Weinhard’s® Root Beer.

Q: What made Weinhard’s® so special for you?

David Slone: It was such a great combination of yeast, sassafras, vanilla, licorice, black cherry and other flavors, all together.

Q: A complex combination.

David Slone: Yes, very much so, but they all work together on the tongue.

Q: I guess you could say that you were hooked?

David Slone: (laughs) Yeah, I was hooked. I had to start trying to find as many root beers as I could!

Q: Tell us more about the history of root beer.

David Slone: Sure, I’d be happy to. Root beer really goes back to Colonial times, when they referred to it as “small beer.”

Q: Was small beer alcoholic?

David Slone: Sometimes, yes, sometimes, no. It would include whatever ingredients they could find, really.

Q: I had no idea it went back so far.

David Slone: Well, you have to figure beer goes back about as far as cultivated grain does, and small beer would follow.

Q: Ingredients like what?

David Slone: Early recipes might include sarsaparilla, juniper, dandelion root, burdock, coriander, cinnamon, allspice, molasses and more.

Q: Fascinating! Who had the first commercially-available root beer, though?

David Slone: Commercially-bottled root beer started in the 1870s with Charles Hires. Hires was a Philadelphia pharmacist who fell in love with a herbal tea recipe.

Q: What did Charles Hires do then?

David Slone: He started putting ingredients together to develop a beverage derived from the tea. His drink used over 25 herbs, berries and roots, and made its debut at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial.

Q: Hires’ Root Beer has been around as long as I can remember. What other brands date back for years?

David Slone: Well, I found out that A&W® Root Beer had its debut back in 1919. A&W® was a partnership of Roy Allen and Frank Wright. Today, the brand is part of the Dr Pepper Snapple® group.

Q: Well, let’s get a little closer to what it is that makes root beer so appealing for you and others.

David Slone: No question, it’s the combinations of ingredients. There are so many recipes and varieties out there.

Q: What’s your current favorite?

David Slone: It’s hard to pick out a favorite root beer, there are so many good ones, but recently I got a case of Goose Island® delivered to my place of business.

Q: What was that like?

David Slone: Oh, I loved it! Had a nice spearmint sort of aftertaste.

Q: Isn’t there a Root-Beer-of-the-Month Club?

David Slone: Yes! It’s for real aficionados!

Q: What does membership in the club get you?

David Slone: You can find out more about root beer lore, regional root beers from around the country.

Q: Wow, what else?

David Slone: Well, you can even have sampler packs or sixes of the Root Beer of the Month delivered to your house.

Q: Thanks so much for taking some time with us today.

David Slone: Sure, and I hope you know a little more about root beer now!
